Of course, the membranes and filters need to be replaced regularly since sediments and particulates can accumulate rather quickly.
Not only do impurities are removed from the process, but whatever odors the water has are removed as well. Also, unlike other filtration systems, reverse osmosis does not use any chemicals or its filters which lessens any possibility of chemical contaminations. And in the long run, the filtered water can be used for cleaning tiles, sinks, faucets and toilets since the water does not contain any dissolved minerals and metals which can turn out to be harmful even for household equipment like water heaters.
Now despite the advantages, using reverse osmosis filtering systems do have a couple of disadvantages. First is it will need a lot of pressure from the water to push itself through the membrane. Ideally the pressure from the tap should be at 40 psi or greater. If you live in an area where water supply is not reliable having a reverse water osmosis system might prove to be quite the liability.
Another issue is that the membranes used are not able to filter out ultra fine water pollutants like insecticide and pesticide molecules. These kinds of contaminants can still find their way into your drinking water. However, unfortunately because of the fine membranes the process also removes the important minerals present in water which our body needs as well. So it odes not necessarily mean that since the water that comes out of the reverse osmosis process is pure, it is healthy for our use.
Finally, using reverse osmosis for our protection will produce too much waste water because of the process itself. Because of the pressure and the super fine filters, much of the water that passes through the system will not pass through. Gallons of water are wasted for every gallon purified. However, waste water can be channeled back to the ground water.
